Reception Home Learning  - Term: Autumn 2 2020

Physical development:

Ask your child to take part in activities that will help to develop their fine motor skills:

  • Use scissors to cut out shapes and pictures.
  • Make some play dough and ask them to roll, squeeze, twist and build with it.
  • Make pasta necklaces and bracelets by threading pasta onto string, wool or ribbon.
  • Build 3D models with bricks, Lego and shapes.
  • Paint with water (this is fun outdoors).
  • Help washing up the pots.
  • Throw balls into different size containers (plant pot, bucket, yogurt carton).make it more difficult by moving further away.
  • Use a timer to complete simple challenges e.g. balance on one leg, hop for one minute, jump on the spot, do some star jumps.


Communication, Language and Literacy:

Help your child to develop their communication skills by:

  • Reading stories together and talking about the books when you have read them.
  • Sing nursery rhymes together.
  • Ask your child questions about their day using the prompts: Where? Why? How? When? What?
  • Encourage your child to speak in full sentences e.g. I would like a glass of water please. I went to the park and played on the slide.
  • Involve your child in imaginative play, each take on a role and build stories around props e.g. you could turn a cardboard box into a ship and pretence to be pirates.
  • Read some traditional stories using the online links. Talk about the characters, settings, thoughts and feelings, the plot of the story.


Help your child to develop their understanding of number and shape by:

  • Counting from 0 to 10, add actions to your counting e.g. hop, jump, clap, tap.
  • Write the numbers 0-10.

  • Make a set of number cards 0-10 and use these to play different games e.g. number hunt, bingo, snap, matching numbers to the correct amount of objects.
  • Continue a two-step and three-step pattern. Make some patterns of your own.

  • Use the following website to play some pattern and shape games:

  • Find three items in your house, put them in order according to length e.g. longest, shortest.
  • Find three items in your house, put them in order according to weight e.g. heaviest, lightest.
  • Find three items in your house, put them in order according to height e.g. tallest, shortest.


  • Learn the sounds that these letters make:

(on our school website under the ‘Learning-phonics tips’ there is a video showing you how to pronounce the sounds.


  • Practise reading simple cvc words e.g. sat, pin, den, run, tap, cot, doll, map, duck, get, puff.
  • Practise writing the letters you have learnt on their own and in simple words.
  • Read these tricky words: I the no go to into and. Can you find these words in your reading books?

Topic: Toys

Our topic this half term is ‘Toys’.

  • Talk about and draw your favourite toy. Label your toy learning the sounds you have learnt. Tell your helper why it is your favourite toy.
  • Ask different members of your family what their favourite toys were when they were younger.
  • Get your toys and sort them into different ways e.g. how they move, what they are made from, do they have batteries, toys that light up and toys that make sounds.
  • Design a new toy.
  • Write a list to Father Christmas telling him what you would like for Christmas.
  • Play a game with your family where you all take turns and follow rules. This could be a board game or a card game.
